Practical Radio Skills in Simferopol: Two Weeks of Training
Seven lecturers and students of Slavic Philology and Journalism Department of Tavria National University in Simferopol took part in the two-week practical skills training in radio journalism resulting in a 15-minute multigenre programme, "Education Reform: Crimean Option", made by the team whose members in some cases had no experience of working for radio.
The training was held at the end of January-beginning of February by a well-known Crimean journalist, Valentyna Samar, and the media expert of ZHORNA Project, Andriy Kulykov, using professional-level equipment, provided by the Project - mini-disc recorders, microphones meant for radio recordings, as well as "CoolEditPro" sound editing software. Valentyna Samar also provided a well-tested cassette tape recorder which she so many times used for making pieces for the BBC Ukrainian Service.
Discussions on theory of radio alternated with exercises: the participants were recording despatches and interviews, as well as scripting the programme. Everybody agreed that they should take education reform as the topic of their final product, more specifically, testing in Crimean schools and higher educational establishments and problems that face school students, their parents and lecturers.
In the final programme made by the training's participants, one can hear voices of children and parents, academics and education officials, including Crimea's Minister for Education.
The radio training was the first from among a series of trainings organized for Tavria University by ZHORNA Project. The next training, in TV journalism, will start by the end of February. It will be delivered by Valentyna Samar and the Project's expert, Russell Peasgood.
